“Communication improvements are similar to those achieved in person”

What is it ?

Tele-practice occurs when an online video calling platform is used to deliver therapy instead of face to face sessions with adults and children. You may remain at home while receiving the same high standard of therapy.

How does it work ?

  • You and your speech therapist will first choose a secure platform that best suits you to communicate (eg; zoom, skype, whatsapp video).

  • A time will be scheduled for a session.

  • You will be informed of everything required to have on hand for a productive session (eg. toys, pen & paper, quiet space).

What do I need ?

  • Good internet connection

  • Computer or laptop or ipad or tablet with a microphone and video camera

  • Quiet space

  • anything else specific to your needs will be communicated over the phone prior to your session

Will I benefit from Tele-practice ?

The research says:

  • Telepractice can be just as effective as in person services for adults and children (ASHA’s evidence maps)

  • Parents improved their communication skills with their child (Meadan et al., 2017)

  • Communication improvements are similar to those achieved in person and overall better than no-treatment conditions (Coufal et al., 2018; Grogan-Johnson et al., 2013; Sutherland et al., 2018; Wales et al., 2017)

  • Many clients reported their were satisfied with service delivery online (Covert et al., 2019; Molini-Aveionas et al., 2015; Sutherland et al., 2018)
